Environmental Responsibility
The most enjoyable aspect of woodworking is, by far, working with beautiful timber! From locally sourced native New Zealand timbers to luxurious exotic hardwoods, using such a valuable and natural material is hugely rewarding. While diamonds are very common in our universe, wood is incredibly rare, as it requires the existence of life. It makes me sad that our species appears largely unaware of the fact that wood is a unique, delicate & finite resource and must be treasured as such. Living in the beautiful wilderness of Fiordland is a constant reminder of our relationship with the natural world and our responsibility to be mindful of our impact on our environment.
With this in mind, I always source my materials carefully. Any native timbers, such as Macrocarpa or Rimu, are either reclaimed wood or locally sourced from nearby timbermills. I purchase other timber species primarily from BBS Timber in Christchurch, which has a fastidious approach to sustainable sourcing of timbers and forestry practices.
I endeavour to avoid the use of plastic in any of my packaging and I will always offer affordable repairs for all items, reinforcing my promise of quality craftmanship alongside a conscientious approach to product consumption.
It can be challenging to source certain niche items in New Zealand, due to our somewhat isolated position on the planet, with tools or workshop supplies occassionally being only available overseas. However, where possible I will happily spend more to buy from supplies and manufacturers in New Zealand.
If you're looking for woodworking supplies in NZ I've had great service from the following suppliers:
-
Pirhana Tools, based in Nelson
-
Carbatec, Auckland & Christhchurch
-
Timberly Woodturning, Auckland
I hope this inspires you to shop locally and sustainably and demonstrates my committment to the quality & longevity of my woodwork.
